112,000 quit work to care for dementia sufferers

Analysis of official data by the Centre for Economics and Business Research has found that more than 112,000 people “had no choice but to leave their jobs” last year to care for relatives with dementia.

The workforce exodus is calculated to have cost businesses about £3.2bn.

The Alzheimer’s Society (who commissioned the report) warned that this figure could double by 2040 if the social care system is not overhauled.

The research also shows that a further 147,000 people are struggling to balance their careers with their caring responsibilities as many cut back on their working hours.
