Coronavirus and the latest indicators for the UK economy and society: 4 June 2020

The economy indicators, include Final results from Wave 5 of the Business Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Survey (BICS) of UK businesses for the period 4 May to 17 May 2020. which show:

  • 42% of businesses responding to the Business Impact of Coronavirus Survey (BICS) had less than 6 months of cash reserves, while 79% had applied for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

  • Of businesses who had temporarily paused trading between 4 and 17 May 2020, manufacturing and construction industries had the highest proportion of businesses expecting to restart in the two weeks following responding to the survey, at 36% and 35% respectively.

  • Of businesses that intend to start trading again in the next two weeks, 99% plan to put some safety measures in place, such as social distancing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
