Coronavirus (COVID-19) latest insights 23 August 2021

ONS have published mortality statistics for July 2021.

  • Taking into account the age and size of the population, the mortality rate for COVID-19 rose in both England and Wales between June and July 2021.

  • In England, the age-standardised mortality rate (ASMR) was statistically significantly higher, rising from 7.5 deaths per 100,000 people in June to 20.5 in July. In Wales, the ASMR rose to 11.5 per 100,000 people in July, but the number of deaths from COVID-19 in June was too low to calculate a reliable ASMR, so it is not possible to form a comparison.

  • Coronavirus was the ninth leading cause of death in England in July 2021, accounting for 2.4% of all deaths registered, and the 22nd leading cause of death in Wales (1.2% of all deaths).

  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease was the leading cause of death in both countries in July 2021.
