The latest deaths registrations highlighted

  • 769 deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19) in the week ending 27 August 2021, accounting for around 1 in 15 deaths from all causes (6.6%).

  • The number of deaths from COVID-19 was the highest since the week ending 26 March 2021.

  • COVID-19 deaths increased in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but fell slightly in Wales.

Separate data showed that there were

  • 5,224 suicides registered in England and Wales in 2020, compared with 5,691 the previous year, a drop of 8.2%.

  • The decrease in the number of suicides registered in 2020 is likely to be due to registration delays during the pandemic and a decrease in male suicide at the start of the pandemic.
