Coronavirus (COVID-19) roundup: 14 July 2020

ONS published the latest GDP data up to May 2020, as well as weekly deaths registrations up to 3 July 2020.

Some of the main points include:

  • Monthly GDP grew by 1.8% in May 2020 (but remained 24.5% below its February 2020 level)

  • Over the three months to May 2020, GDP fell by 19.1%, as government restrictions on movement dramatically reduced economic activity 

  • The services sector fell by 18.9%, production by 15.5% and construction by 29.8%

  • There were 50,548 deaths involving COVID-19 in England and Wales registered up to 3 July 2020 (27,826 men and 22,722 women)

  • The total number of deaths in the week ending 3 July was 9,140, below the five-year average for the third week running
