Coronavirus (COVID-19) roundup: 9 June 2020

ONS have published data on deaths registered in England and Wales, including those involving COVID-19.

ONS have also published analysis of the business impact of the virus between 23 March (start of lockdown) and 17 May 2020. Some of the main points include:

  • There were 45,748 deaths involving COVID-19 registered up to 29 May (25,359 men and 20,389 women)

  • Most deaths involving COVID-19 have been among those aged 65 and over (40,796 out of 45,748)

  • The total number of deaths in the week ending 29 May was 9,824, the lowest total of the year to date but still 20% higher than the five-year average 

  • The highest number of excess deaths were seen in private homes, followed by care homes

  • Comparing the results of Wave 2 of the business impact survey (reference period of 23 March to 5 April 2020) against Wave 5 (reference period of 4 to 17 May 2020), the proportion of businesses continuing to trade that expected their workforce to decrease has fallen from 30% to 9%
