Fifth of adults abused as children

ONS analysis suggests that around one in five adults in England and Wales were abused as children.

The study looked at emotional, physical and sexual abuse - as well as domestic violence.

The ONS estimates that 8.5m people aged between 18 and 74 were abused or witnessed abuse as children before the age of 16.

The report is the first official attempt to quantify the extent of all forms of child abuse, and aims to provide a better understanding of the scale and nature of the issue.
