Local Government’s Latest Challenge: Combatting Climate Change

As local authorities gathered together for their full council budget meetings, a non-financial item has also been featuring on several agendas. This item is to do with the environment.
Climate change has long been a subject bubbling beneath the surface, yet in the last decade when it came to the budgetary allocations, the environment has not featured as a priority for local government.
This may be about to change. Following local authorities’ receipt of similar Notices of Motion linked to a national campaign, many councils have recently declared that the UK is in the midst of a ‘Climate Emergency’.
Those authorities who have made this bold statement now need to show how they will prioritise the environment.
