As of 16th April ONS published three new pieces of analysis on underlying causes of death in March, the impact of COVID-19 on businesses and people’s general worries about COVID-19. Some of the main points include:
- There were 3,912 registered deaths involving COVID-19 in England and Wales in March 2020, 86% of which had the virus as the underlying cause of death
- The vast majority of deaths involving COVID-19 (91%) had at least one pre-existing health condition
- One in four businesses (25%) said they had temporarily closed or paused trading because of COVID-19
- The remaining businesses (that were still trading) had furloughed 21% of their staff, on average
- More than 80% of adults have said they are very or somewhat worried about the effect that the coronavirus (COVID-19) is having on their life
