Unmarried mother triumphs in widow’s allowance case

Unmarried mother of four Siobhan McLaughlin has won a landmark UK Supreme Court case that could allow her to claim a Widowed Parent's Allowance following the death of her partner of 23 years. The ruling may allow others in similar situations across the country to now claim. The Supreme Court Justices found the legislation which governs the WPA discriminates against children born out of wedlock, and therefore is incompatible with human rights law.
